Get started with your microgreens

Growing instructions

Step 1

  1. Place three mats in the box.
  2. Lightly mist them with water.
  3. Open one seed bag per mat and spread the seeds evenly.
  4. Mist each mat for about five seconds to settle the seeds.
  5. Put the lid back on and let nature do the rest.

Step 2

  1. Place the MicrogreenBox in a room with stable temperature.
  2. Open the lid once a day and water the seeds, keeping the mats moist at all times.
  3. Put the lid back on; darkness encourages the seeds to stretch and grow in search of light.
  4. Repeat the process for 3–4 days.

Step 3

  1. After 3–4 days the seeds will have popped, with small sprouts reaching out in search of light.
  2. Water the sprouts.
  3. Place the MicrogreenBox under a light source, such as a window or lamp.
  4. Water as needed, at least once a day, and watch your microgreens grow.

More about the Microgreen Box

If you don’t have any growing experience, you might feel unsure and find the process more complicated than it actually is. Once you’ve grown a batch, the next one will feel much easier.

Dense with nutrients

Microgreens are young plants harvested early in their growth, just after the first leaves have developed. At this stage, the plant is dense with nutrients, energy, and plant compounds used to fuel rapid growth.

They’re small but concentrated in content.

Because microgreens are harvested days after germination, they often contain higher levels of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients compared to the same plants grown to full size.

We recommend about three days. The purpose of watering and then putting the lid back on is to encourage the seeds to “pop” and start reaching for the light. This helps them grow more stable once they are actually exposed to light.

You can lift the lid and feel the “mat” to check if it’s moist. You don’t want the seeds to dry out. It’s fine if the seeds are exposed to light briefly, even during the “dark” phase.

We recommend 5 seconds per mat when spraying water.

Here is our process:

  • At the start, first spray water on the mats, then add the seeds, the spray water again.
  • Check daily how dry the mats are and if needed add water.
  • After 3 days remove the lid and spray again continuously.
  • After 6 days, pour water underneath the mats, so the microgreens have better access to water for the roots underneath, that have grown through the mats.

You usually won’t need the entire seed packet. Just spread the seeds evenly over the mat.

When it’s time to open the box and put the seeds under a light source you can choose between a window our a standard desk light or something. Even fluorescent kitchen light works.

This is not mold but roots looking for water, more specifically they are called “root hairs”. If you see the root hairs appearing, this is a sign to spray on more water.
